Through Devastation, the Idea of SEEK is Born
When a disaster strikes in a third world country, it can be difficult to determine where to start recovery efforts. It can be even more difficult to hold on to hope and to persevere through the innumerable trials that must be faced.
The earthquakes that hit Haiti in January of 2010 caused shockwaves throughout the country, but figurative shockwaves continued to affect people for months and years after the initial physical destruction.
One particular place that was “hit” was a growing Christian school in the city of Thomassique, Haiti. It was a school that began small, intended as a Kindergarten only, but over the course of more than a decade had grown to over 500 students, Kindergarten through 6th grade. However, due to the destructive nature of earthquakes with which the people were now familiar, fear of the school’s two-story cement building was all too real. Parents no longer felt safe to send their children into the upper level classrooms, and they insisted that the school relocate or be rebuilt.
Unfortunately, the pastor who had started this school had no means of doing any such thing. He was ready to give up.
Many miles away, in a small town in Nebraska, Concordia University students heard about the possibility that this Haitian school was likely to close, and they thought how unnecessary it was for this wonderful Christian outreach to end. At the time, besides more than 500 attending students, it was determined that well over 1,000 additional children in the area were in need of its services.
The young Concordia students in Nebraska decided to ask God for help and to act.
Fundraising began to purchase land for the school to be rebuilt, a mission team was sent a few months later, and a school board was formed to help move things forward.
God planted seeds of hope.
Some of those same young people from Concordia University persevered with the desire to help through the years and realized that the dream that began with that one school was something that had grown into an extraordinary vision – the vision of building up existing educational ministry throughout Haiti and helping it to spread as far as the Lord provides.
Serving, Educating, and Evangelizing for the Kingdom.
